  How can you engage students in meaningful conversations around new literacy practices, helping them to navigate in a purposeful and informed manner?            Am I the only one that has students that find it embarrassing when asked to incorporate their favourite social media app trends within their work? The very first time I asked my scholars to make a tiktok routine/jingle to help them with memorizing the scientific inquiry process, they looked at me as if I had horns and a big red nose. My students enjoy social media, and various applications with very high social media footprints. Jilly Woodhouse CURI-6010-B02: New Media and New Literacies M2D1: Blog #1: Defining New Literacies and why it matters?            In the article “Sampling ‘the New’ in New Literacies, the authors unpacked the definition of new literacy to be more than just understanding texts and discourse through technologies, but understanding through what they describe as the “new ethos”. The “new ethos” as a shift in values, mindsets, social practices associated with digital culture ( Knobel & Lankshear, 2007 ). As a science educator, the “new” literacy practices mirrors the ways in which scientific knowledge is communicated and understood. It also promotes scientific collaboration and the use of digital communication tools used in scientific research and for communicating data and results.   Hi classmates, my name is Jilly Woodhouse from The Bronx, New York. I am currently an 8th grade science teacher at a charter school in the South Bronx. I earned my BS in Biobehavioral Health and Neuropsychology at The Pennsylvania State University. Then, with the hopes of becoming a doctor, enrolled at The University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Biomedical Sciences, when I realised my projected career path was not fulfilling the heart. I decided to take a break from my studies and quit my job as a lab assistant and became a teaching assistant in the science department of a high school. Unbeknownst to me, what was just a job,  became a passion. My tenure at Empire State, I hope to attain a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instructions.  Middle school science was my favourite part of my curriculum.
