Jilly Woodhouse CURI-6010-B02: New Media and New Literacies M5D2: Blog #4: Conducting Research on New literacies Consider what topic you are planning to research for your final project.  New Media Literacies in Science classroom. How does the integration of new media literacies in science classrooms affect students' scientific reasoning skills and success in science? Discuss what topic interests you most and why, and what some practical applications of delving in depth in this topic could be for your work as an educator.  As a science teacher, the topic of New Media Literacies in the Science Classroom is of great interest to me because it aligns with how today’s students learn and interact with the world. In a digital age where information is abundant and constantly evolving, integrating new media tools such as simulations, educational videos, podcasts, and interactive platforms can significantly enhance student engagement and u...

M3D2: Blog #3: Leveraging Tools, Texts, and Talk in My Teaching Context

How can you engage students in meaningful conversations around new literacy practices, helping them to navigate in a purposeful and informed manner?            Am I the only one that has students that find it embarrassing when asked to incorporate their favourite social media app trends within their work? The very first time I asked my scholars to make a tiktok routine/jingle to help them with memorizing the scientific inquiry process, they looked at me as if I had horns and a big red nose. My students enjoy social media, and various applications with very high social media footprints. As a science educator to increase retention, engagement and understanding, bridging the gap between science inquiry and media usage is important. Engaging students in meaningful conversations around new literacies involves connecting their everyday digital experiences with critical thinking and purposeful reflection. Start by exploring how they...

M2D2: Blog #2: How New Literacies are Relevant to Us

Jilly  Woodhouse CURI-6010-B02: New Media and New Literacies M2D2: Blog #2: How New Literacies are Relevant to Us      Article #1: Improving Digital Practices for Literacy, Learning, and Justice More Than Just Tools      Article #2: Digital Literacy: The skills that matter in adult education Hey bloggers, let's dive deeper and continue this conversation on media literacy and why its fast emerging practices are making a huge impact on education and how our students receive and retain information. I am not the biggest fan of technology, however as I go deeper into research, I am heavily convinced on the effectiveness of media literacy and how I can use it to enhance my science instructions.  Main Ideas               The two articles I chose to review were “Improving Digital Practices for Literacy, Learning, and Justice More Than Just Tools” by the International Literacy...

M2D1: Blog #1: Defining New Literacies and why it matters?

Jilly Woodhouse CURI-6010-B02: New Media and New Literacies M2D1: Blog #1: Defining New Literacies and why it matters?            In the article “Sampling ‘the New’ in New Literacies, the authors unpacked the definition of new literacy to be more than just understanding texts and discourse through technologies, but understanding through what they describe as the “new ethos”. The “new ethos” as a shift in values, mindsets, social practices associated with digital culture ( Knobel & Lankshear, 2007 ). As a science educator, the “new” literacy practices mirrors the ways in which scientific knowledge is communicated and understood. It also promotes scientific collaboration and the use of digital communication tools used in scientific research and for communicating data and results. Problem-solving and design-based thinking support inquiry-driven learning, allowing students to use digital tools to explore and test scientific concepts. Alt...

Discussion Post 1

Hi classmates, my name is Jilly Woodhouse from The Bronx, New York. I am currently an 8th grade science teacher at a charter school in the South Bronx. I earned my BS in Biobehavioral Health and Neuropsychology at The Pennsylvania State University. Then, with the hopes of becoming a doctor, enrolled at The University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Biomedical Sciences, when I realised my projected career path was not fulfilling the heart. I decided to take a break from my studies and quit my job as a lab assistant and became a teaching assistant in the science department of a high school. Unbeknownst to me, what was just a job,  became a passion. My tenure at Empire State, I hope to attain a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instructions.  Middle school science was my favourite part of my curriculum. My experience during middle school is what ignited my love for the sciences. In middle school science was FUN, we learned about EVERYTHING. During that time, EVERYTHING just m...
